Most of Matty's clothes they gave to Goodwill. Othersbaby sunsuit clothes, his first shoes, his baseball uniform and his favorite sweatshirtTerry could not part with, and the sight of them broke her down. Nor could she enter his room. Calvin had to go in to retrieve things. She kept the door closed and even avoided the central staircase, taking the rear steps. But on the evening of the funeral, she wandered in and slept in his bed. Had her mind been clear to analyze her behavior, she would have understood that she was trying to get on top of her grief, to accept the reality of his loss. The next morning she woke up desperate to leave the house.
Her earlier apprehension had been confirmed. The place was a malignant entity that had claimed all of her children. While to some that might seem a purely irrational reflex fashioned in the fragility of her state, Terry Hazzard could not shake the feeling. Nor could she wait to get out.
Matthew Adam Hazzard was buried on Thursday, May 28, Memorial Day weekend.
The next morning Terry flew to her sister's place in Maine.
And Calvin called Robin Priest at New York Polytechnic Institute, then Beverly Otis at her real estate office.
